Standard 4
Standard 4 of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers is concerned with how teachers can create and nurture a safe and supportive learning environment. For many students, school provides a safe space where they are able to feel safe and free from harm. It is vital that educators do everything in their power to ensure this remains the case, and this requires an understanding of how to manage a classroom effectively, managing any challenging behaviour from students and creating a safe space for students to engage the relevant content. In Standard 4.3 I show my practical approaches to managing challenging behaviour.
This standard is significant to the roles of Drama and English because these two subjects regularly cover subjects and themes which may be distressing to some students in the class, including abuse, war, refugees, rascism and death - things which one or more of the students may have firsthand experience with. The ability of a teacher to foster a safe learning environment where students can discuss and explore these issues openly and honestly is vital to fostering critical thought and wellbeing in students.
This kind of ethical thinking must also be applied to online activities. In the 21st Century classroom students are constantly engaged with online activities - from researching assignments to exploring online content as part of a lesson andteachers must be able to conduct these activities in a safe, ethical and responsible manner while protecting students from harmful online situations.
-
Start with an overview/description of the standard including its significance for all teachers.
-
Then move to the significance of the standard for you across your curriculum area/s.
-
Provide a quite detailed description of the evidence you have attached indicating how/where it demonstrates that you met the requirements for this standard.
-
Attach your evidence (1-2 pieces). If it is already in digital form then you can simply attach it directly. If it is in paper form then you should scan it then attach. NB. Please limit the resolution of scanned evidence to about 200dpi, this should create files of an acceptable size
